Latvijas Pasts Presents a Commemorative Stamp in Celebration of Liepāja’s Anniversary

This year, the city of Liepāja — renowned for its sea, music and winds — celebrates its 400th anniversary. Latvijas Pasts has prepared a special gift not only for the city itself but also for everyone who holds Liepāja close to their hearts — a commemorative stamp designed by artist Aleksejs Naumovs. Its presentation and first-day cancellation will take place on 22 May from 2 PM to 5 PM at the Liepāja Karosta Water Tower — a landmark featured in the design of both the stamp and the special envelope.
Latvijas Pasts Presents a Commemorative Stamp in Celebration of Liepāja’s Anniversary

Liepāja, first mentioned in historical records as Līvas village, was granted city rights in 1625 and is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year with a wide-ranging and diverse programme of events.

To mark the windy city’s anniversary, Latvijas Pasts has prepared a special gift a commemorative stamp and a specially designed envelope created by artist Aleksejs Naumovs. The artist — renowned for his emotionally rich works, distinctive narratives and expressive use of colours — captivated audiences at the Liepāja Latvian Society House this March with a remarkable exhibition, where the city stood out on the world map alongside other dream destinations. The focal point of the stamp chosen by the artist is the Karosta Water Tower — a distinctive landmark and an outstanding example of industrial architecture.

The 37-metre-high water tower, built in 1905 to supply drinking water to the Karosta area, has been granted the status of a regionally significant industrial heritage monument. The tower, renovated in the latter half of the 20th century, retains both original and carefully replicated features, including stairs, windows, interior and exterior doors, as well as floor tiles.

“Liepāja is a city of contrasts and colours, and undoubtedly, of art. It does not leave anyone indifferent, and I aimed to capture this mood in the stamp dedicated to the city. It was important for me to accentuate Liepāja’s uniqueness, its cultural and historical heritage, and its architecture as a witness to the historical period, while also embracing the vibrancy of colours,”

Mr. Naumovs.

The new stamp has a nominal value of EUR 2.55 and is intended for paying postage on items weighing up to 100 grams sent within Latvia. Its print run will be 10,000 copies, while the specially designed envelope will be available in 500 copies.

The presentation of the stamp will take place at the Karosta Water Tower on 22 May at 2 PM, and it will be attended by Gunārs Ansiņš, Chairperson of the Liepāja City Council, artist Aleksejs Naumovs and representatives of Latvijas Pasts. The new stamps and envelopes will be available for purchase and cancellation at the event location until 5 PM.

The new stamp will initially be available for purchase at post offices in major cities, as well as on the Latvijas Pasts e-store https://veikals.pasts.lv/.

The next philatelic product release is scheduled for 4 July.
