Prohibitions and restrictions

Prohibitions

  • Coins, banknotes, currency notes, securities, traveler’s cheques, platinum, gold, silver, precious stones, jewelry, and other valuable items;
  • Explosive and highly flammable substances;
  • Corrosive substances;
  • Ozone-depleting substances;
  • All types of gases;
  • IInfectious biological substances;
  • Non-infectious biological substances;
  • Weapons and ammunition, including their parts and accessories;
  • Radioactive materials;
  • Narcotic and psychotropic substances;
  • Live animals;
  • Cat and dog furs;
  • Unprocessed animal products;
  • Material of a pornographic or erotic nature;
  • Waste;
  • Mineral fertilisers, soil supplements;
  • Perishable food products;
  • Potatoes;
  • Dried beans originating from Nigeria.
  • Instruments for torture and execution of the death penalty.

Restrictions

  • Animal-origin products, except canned goods.
    (A veterinary service certificate must be attached.)
  • Seal products.
    (Only for non-commercial purposes, accompanied by a written declaration of import and documents proving the products were obtained in the respective third country.)
  • Medicines and pharmaceutical products:
    • Individuals have the right to receive medicines by post for personal use from a clearly identifiable medicine sender authorized to distribute medicines under the laws of the sending country. Medicines must be in original packaging and accompanied by a purchase receipt or equivalent document.
  • The quantity of medicinal products received at one time may be equivalent to:

    • 12 months’ supply if imported from European Economic Area (EEA) countries;
    • 6 months’ supply if imported from third countries. ( For recipients from third countries, medicines sent by post are delivered against a prescription or a document issued by a medical institution. Documents in foreign languages must be accompanied by a certified translation into the national language.)

    (It is not allowed to send narcotic analgesics, psychotropic substances, active substances, steroids, testosterone, and growth hormones)

  • Legal entities require a special license for medicine manufacturing/importation..
    • For clinical trial medicines: permission for import of clinical trial medicines in the Republic of Latvia.
    • For unregistered medicines: permission for import of unregistered medicines in the Republic of Latvia
    • For medicine samples: permission for import of medicine samples in the Republic of Latvia.
  • Registered medicines can also be imported by a medicine holder who does not have an import license but is authorized to represent the license holder, including the use of an import license issued to another person.
  • Meat and meat products - bacon, fresh, processed meat, animal fats, sausages, canned meat, meat-filled pastry products, pasta, sauces, soups. (only import from Member States of the European Union and in small quantities from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland allowed)
  • Milk and dairy products – milk, yogurt, cream, curd, kefir, cheese, butter, condensed milk, ice cream. (only import from Member States of the European Union and in small quantities from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland allowed)
  • Animal feed - pet food, dog chew toys, coarse ground flour mixtures. (only import from Member States of the European Union and in small quantities from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland allowed)
  • Honey  (up to 2 kg, from the Faroe Islands and Greenland up to 10 kg)
  • Eggs (up to 2 kg, from the Faroe Islands and Greenland up to 10 kg)
  • Infant formula and baby food (up to 2 kg, from the Faroe Islands and Greenland up to 10 kg)
  • Fish products - dried, thermally processed, salted or smoked fish, shrimps, lobsters, dead clams, shucked oysters. (up to 20 kg, from the Faroe Islands and Greenland without quantity limits)
  • Fish roe. (up to 125 g. in appropriately labeled packaging, from the Faroe Islands and Greenland with no quantity restrictions)
  • Nuts in shell. (up to 2 kg. if a phytosanitary certificate by a third country is issued.)
  • Musical instruments. (For non-commercial purposes, including personal use, must be accompanied by a musical instrument certificate. The validity period of the instrument certificate must not exceed 3 years. For commercial purposes, an import permit or re-export certificate is required)
