Philately

Philately is the action of collecting postage stamps and other publications by collectors – philatelists.

Postage stamps are postage payment marks, used for paying for mailing of letters.

Collections of postage stamps can be created according to various principles. Collections can be made of postage stamps of a particular country in chronological order as well as of those dedicated to particular topics, such as flora, fauna, sports, Olympics, space, etc.

Collectors can create their own collections of used (stamped) and unused postage stamps. People also collect postage stamp blocks, sheets, blocks of four stamps, First Day Covers, special sealing envelopes, stamp exhibition booklets and other postal publications.

The paper used for printing stamps, as well as the featured watermarks, colour variations, perforations and other parameters of the stamps are important.

In the Republic of Latvia, the social life of philatelists is organised by the Latvian Philatelist Union.
