A stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Open-Air Museum

On the 10th of May 2024, Latvijas Pasts is releasing a stamp and a cover to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at the Open-Air Museum, 440 Brivibas gatve, Riga, from 10 AM to 3 PM on the 10th of May.

The print run of the new stamp will be 30,000 copies and the print run of the cover will be 500 copies. The face value of the stamp is €1.97, corresponding to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 100 grams within Latvia.

The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja. In the visual design of the stamp and the cover, the artist has used materials from the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia.

The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia is one of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe. It was established with the aim of ensuring that future generations have a record of the farmers’ way of life. This includes documenting the buildings, daily routines and the locations of the buildings within the farmers’ or fishermen’s homesteads. The focus is on the period from the 17th century to the mid-20th century in different regions of Latvia. In the midst of the anniversary year filled with various events, one of the most ambitious ones will be the launch of the museum’s summer season on the 11th of May 2024. On this day, individuals dressed in clothing from the era will engage in activities that reflect the specific time and place, spanning over thirty objects within the museum.

The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities and in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts: https://veikals.pasts.lv/.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 24th of May.

Philatelic works issued by Latvijas Pasts are highly valued both among the customers and philatelic collectors and experts. Based on stringently regulated standards, international associations of collectors of philatelic materials have determined that the stamps issued by Latvijas Pasts are on par with the philatelic releases issued by the largest countries in the world. As a result, these stamps are routinely included both in the catalogues of philatelic releases recognised around the world and in the collections of prestigious collectors.
